Women’s Hoops Succeeds in the Classroom during Fall Semester

NORMAL, Ill.  – The Illinois State women's basketball team continued its success in the classroom, earning a 3.50 grade-point average (GPA) during the Fall 2014 semester, as announced by head coach Barb Smith Monday. Ten Redbirds were named to the AFNI Honor Roll, while five student-athletes earned a 4.0 during the Fall.

Kalyn Gebhardt, Stekara Hall, Lindsay Smith, Kelli Tolar and Katy Winge all had 4.0 performances in the classroom, while they were joined by Octavia Crump, Mackenzie Freeman, Mary Sims, Taylor Stewart and Lexie Taylor on the AFNI Honor Roll. It was the first time in Crump's career that she was named to the honor roll.

"Being a student-athlete takes an enormous amount of time, an understanding of time management and a commitment to the resources in the Karin L. Bone Study Center," Smith said.  "Last year we made history in women's basketball by earning our highest team GPA of any women's basketball team at 3.56, and this fall was no different.  We held the same standards in the classroom, as our team earned a 3.50 GPA, with five student-athletes earning a 4.0 and two others earning the highest GPAs in their careers. I am proud of the effort our team had in the classroom."

The Redbirds return home Friday for the final homestand of the regular season. ISU welcomes Wichita State Friday at 7:05 p.m., before hosting Missouri State Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
