MOBILE, Ala. - After the first two rounds of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, the Illinois State men's golf team sits in 15th place, carding a team score of 623 (321-302) in high wind conditions. Tyler Gentilella and Jordan Fahel led the team after the first day of the intercollegiate with a 151 (81-70) and 152 (81-71), respectively.
Head coach Ray Kralis knows the team can respond after a tough two rounds.
"We had a tough time getting started in the morning round," Kralis said. "It was difficult to turn the tide and build any momentum with the challenging conditions if you were trying to climb out of a hole. Many of our miscues were a bit uncharacteristic for this group. So, we need to put that behind us and come back strong Tuesday like Tyler and Jordan did in round two. We'll learn from this and certainly will not let a day like this define us."
As Fahel and Gentilella led the way, Zach Burry shot a 160 (80-80), while Jason Marrs carded a 162 (29-83) in the first two rounds. Kyle Meihofer ended day one with a 165 (84-81) and tied for 73rd overall. In individual play, Josh Edison finished the day tied for sixth place, shooting 150 (75-75), while Christian Crabill is tied for 26th with a 167 (87-87).
Out of the 15 teams, South Alabama is leading the way with a total score of 582 (299-283). Auburn (291-292) and Mississippi (292-291) are tied for second place with team scores of 583, while Memphis (302-285) sits in fourth place with a 587.
The Redbirds open the final round of play Tuesday in hopes of moving up the team leaderboard during the third round, despite the rough conditions.
