SAN DIEGO, Calif. – After the first round of the Barona Intercollegiate, the Illinois State men's golf team is tied for 10th place with UT-Arlington, carding a team score of 293. Jordan Fahel (70) and Jason Marrs (72) are leading the Redbirds into the final round of play, after Monday's second round was postponed due to darkness.
Head coach Ray Kralis was pleased with his team's efforts against tough competition.
"I was very pleased overall with our performance," Kralis said. "Jordan and Jason played well throughout the day, and everyone had strong stretches of golf and stayed focused when battling adversity. Darkness was an issue at the end, so we need to wrap up round two efficiently and go get round three."
As Fahel and Marrs led the way, Zach Burry shot a 3-over-par 75, Tyler Gentilella shot a 76 and Kyle Meihofer followed with a 79 after the first round of play on the par-72 course.
Of the 14 teams competing, Sacramento State is paving the way at 14-under-par (274) trailed closely by San Diego State (276), UC Riverside (277), and San Diego (278). UC Irvine is still in contention at 5-under-par (283), while the Redbirds are in front of San Francisco (296) and South Dakota State (305).
ISU opens the final two rounds of play at 9:30 a.m. (CST) in hopes of moving up the team leaderboard during the last day of play.
