COLUMBUS, Ohio – Wenting Zhang qualified for the NCAA Championships in a second event Friday, adding the 1-meter diving event to her championship schedule after qualifying in the 3-meter on Thursday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State.
Zhang's score of 599.15 Friday earned her a trip to the NCAA Championships in the 1-meter competition.
"I couldn't be happier that she is headed back to NCAAs in both events," head diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "I believe this is a testament to her diving that she has been able to do something so remarkable two years in a row.
"She is in great shape to compete next week and I look forward to for final meet of her diving career representing Illinois State."
Last year, Zhang finished in sixth place on the 3-meter board at the NCAA Championships. Her score of 363.90 earned her title of ISU's first-ever All-American.
Illinois State's Molly Schatz also competed Friday, but did not qualify for the national meet.
"I am proud of the way Molly competed today," Hoffmann said. "It was a fantastic learning experience for her. She has a bright future ahead of her and I look forward to being a part of her future endeavors at Illinois State."
Zhang will continue to compete next week at the women's NCAA Championships taking place March 19-21, in Greensboro, North Carolina.
