TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Illinois State men's golfer Tyler Gentilella finished out the tournament strong shooting a 70, one stroke away from the top-tournament finisher in the last round. The Redbirds finished in 14th, carding a team score of 890 (285-305-300) through the three-round intercollegiate.
Head coach Ray Kralis credits Gentilella with his great performance.
"Tyler finished in strong fashion and can ride some momentum from this week," Kralis said. "With the exception of nine holes, he was very competitive individually in a strong field."
With Gentilella paving the way shooting a 216 (69-77-70) overall, Jordan Fahel followed carding a 222 (71-76-75). Jason Marrs scored a 223 (71-75-77), as well as Josh Edison (78-77-78) and Zach Burry (74-78-81) each shooting 233, respectively. Against the tough competition, Kralis is pleased with the resilience that this group showed.
"Collectively, we had a few big number holes that make it tough to go low," Kralis said. "I was pleased with the fight the group showed and know they gave it their best. We'll take the positives from this one, especially the team score from round one and the chance to go head to head in the same pairing with two top-10 teams in the second round, and keep going forward."
Host team Florida State made a run from seventh place to finish in first with a team score of 843 with a stellar 271 in the final round. East Tennessee followed with an 846 and South Carolina was in third with 847. The Redbirds finished above Cincinnati, Western Kentucky and George Washington.
The Redbirds have three weeks off until they compete in the ASU Red Wolf Classic in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
