NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team fell to Illinois-Chicago, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Evergreen Racquet Club.
"We just weren't solid enough today in singles and doubles," said head coach Maja Kovacek. "We will take two weeks to recover from some injuries and get ready for conference play."
In doubles competition, the duo of junior Kadi Ilves and freshman Donna Haycock competed in an unfinished set, while winning over UIC's Keti Mebuke and Onana Manole, 5-2, in No. 1 doubles. Meanwhile, sophomore Chanel Scudiero and Natalia Parchowska suffered a loss to UIC's Jackie Altansarnai and Ann-Sophie Hahn, 6-1, in No. 2 doubles, while freshman Catherine Shulman and Valerija Gercar were swept by UIC's Bianca Zuzu and Melik LeBlanc, 6-1, in No. 3 doubles.
In singles competition, the Flames added to their lead, after claiming victory over ISU in all six flights. Ilves forfeited in the first set of No. 1 singles play, while trailing UIC's Mebuke, 4-2. Meanwhile, Haycock fell to UIC's Altansarnai, 6-0, 6-4, in No. 2 singles, while Scudiero was defeated by UIC's Manole, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 3 singles. In No. 4 singles, Gercar fell to UIC's Hahn, 6-1, 6-1. Likewise, Shulman was beat by UIC's Zuzu, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 5 singles, while UIC's LeBlanc earned a, 6-4,6-0, win over Parchowska in No. 6 singles.
Next up, the Redbirds will head outdoors to the Gregory Street Tennis Courts in Normal, Illinois, to host Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake Friday, April 3, and Northern Iowa Saturday, April 4. Both competitions are set to begin at 1 p.m.
