NORMAL,  Ill. – For the first time at home this spring, the Illinois State women's tennis team competed outside at the Gregory Street Courts on a warm but blustery day on Saturday against Marquette. After taking an early lead, the Redbirds (11-4) earned a 7-0 sweep over the Golden Eagles (6-11) in the final non-conference match of the season.
ISU took the early advantage, winning the doubles points with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Nicole Iosio and Nuria Sanz defeated Elena Duva and Maria Poon by a score of 6-1 at the No. 2 spot, while the No. 3 tandem of Emma Lindh and Vittoria Benedetti also picked up a 6-1 victory over Marquette's Aiyana Abbott and Luciana Mendoza.
The Golden Eagles made things interesting in singles action, forcing four matches to three sets, however they could not pull any of them out as the Redbirds swept all six matches to come away with a 7-0 sweep
The Redbirds will open Missouri Valley Conference action next Saturday on the road at Valparaiso, with first serve set for 2 p.m. ISU will then head to Chicago on Sunday to take on UIC in a match set for Noon.
