NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State guard Katy Winge received the Jill Hutchison Leadership Award, as announced by head women's basketball coach Barb Smith Monday evening.
The Jill Hutchison Leadership Award is given to a player each year who exemplifies all of the characteristics of a Redbird women's basketball player. The award is in honor of Hutchison, the former Redbird women's coach and Women's Basketball Hall of Fame member. Winge, who served as a team captain during the season, received the award for the first time.
Winge was the only Redbird to start every game this season and is the team's leading scorer with 11.5 points per game. Through 30 games, she has poured in 345 points and tallied double-digit performances in 19 games, including five-straight games with a double-digit scoring effort. Besides leading ISU in points per game, the Eden Prairie, Minnesota, native also leads the Redbirds 3-point field goal percentage (34.7), and ranks second on the team in assists (55) and third in steals (30).
Winge, a MVC Scholar-Athlete honorable mention selection, was named the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Dec. 31, after leading ISU in scoring against Butler and then-No. 25 DePaul. A three-time captain, Winge netted a career-high 25 points at Wisconsin (Nov. 16). She also dished out a career-high five assists against Evansville (Jan. 15), followed by four steals against Bradley (Jan. 30), which was also a career high.
