NORMAL, Ill. – Three members of the Illinois State men's tennis team were honored as members of the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference scholar-athlete team. Juniors Jakub Eisner, Rolando Torrellas and sophomore Dylan Steffens were all nominated Friday morning, making up for almost a third of the MVC scholar-athlete team.
Eisner is currently 9-15 in singles, while posting a 7-12 record this spring. The junior from Kladno, Czech, is 1-2 in conference play this year, but his most recent and impressive victory came last Saturday against No. 40 Tin Ostojic from Wichita State in the No. 1 flight, defeating the Shockers' best singles player in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4. Eisner is also part of the team's best doubles duo, going 10-12 and 9-11 this spring with partner Torrellas.
Torrellas leads the team in overall singles wins, with 15, and is tied for first on the team in spring singles victories, with 11. As mentioned above, Torrellas paired with teammate Eisner this spring to notch the squad's best doubles mark at 9-11. Currently a winner of seven of his last 10 matches, Torrellas also holds the team's best grade point average, 3.66. Like his doubles partner, Torrellas went 1-2 in conference play this year.
The youngest of the Redbird nominees, Steffens holds the team's second-best winning percentage at a .631 clip. The ISU sophomore is also part of the team's second-best doubles duo, earning a 8-5 record with freshman Christoffer Greve. Steffens nabbed 12 singles victories this year and improved his singles record this season compared to his freshman campaign by five matches. Steffens went 1-1 in MVC Conference play this spring.
