Redbirds Pick Up Key Summit League Win Over Omaha, 5-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – With just two matches remaining in the regular season for Illinois State, Wednesday's match with Omaha was a crucial one for seeding in the upcoming Summit League Championship. After taking an early lead, the Redbirds (9-12, 2-2 Summit League) rolled in singles play to pick up a win over the Mavericks (12-10, 2-2 Summit League) at the Evergreen Racquet Club and move into a three-way tie for second place in the league standings.

The Redbirds earned the early doubles point, thanks to wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. The No. 2 tandem of Tin Ostro and Caden Scarlett rolled to a 6-2 win over Omaha's Anthony Scheglowski and Liam Spiers for the first win of the match. ISU then clinched the doubles point thanks to a win at the No. 3 spot by Jett Leong and Finn Logue, who defeated Caleb Peterson and Kaden Taylor by a final of 6-4.

The Redbirds then won four of six singles matches to pick up the 5-2 win over the Mavericks. At the No. 1 spot, Tomas Valencia defeated Liam Spiers by a score of 6-2, 6-3, and at the No. 3 spot, Christian Capacci earned a win over Christian Trevey by a final of 6-3, 7-5. The Redbirds also earned victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, with Leong winning in straight sets at No. 6 and Scarlett winning in three sets over Kaden Taylor by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Illinois State will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, when the Redbirds host North Dakota at 4:30 p.m. CT.
