NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's basketball team has always enjoyed giving back to the community and the summer months are a prime time to do just that. Over recent weeks, the Redbirds volunteered with Special Olympics Summer Games and with St. Vincent dePaul.
"Events, like helping with Special Olympics and in the gardens that provide food for St. Vincent de Paul, provide opportunities for us to give back to the community," head coach Barb Smith said. "It is a simple reminder to us that life doesn't revolve around us. Instead, we need to be of service to the life that revolves around the larger community as a whole. That's how we can make a real difference."
The women's basketball team volunteered in various areas during the Special Olympics' Summer Games working with staff and athletes. Then, they spent time in a local garden, spreading mulch in an effort to help the soil for the food that will benefit St. Vincent de Paul in the fall.
