NORMAL, Ill. – Golfer Tyler Gentilella was named a Division I Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Gentilella and the Illinois State men's golf team also received All-Academic Team recognition by GCAA for maintaining a team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
At the end of the spring semester, the Redbirds held a team GPA of 3.14. Six golfers were named to the AFNI Honor Roll, while two held perfect 4.0 GPAs.
Gentilella, a finance major, holds a 3.21 cumulative GPA, posting a 3.38 GPA at the end of the spring semester. The two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection has also had success on the course. As a sophomore, Gentilella finished second as an individual in the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship. He fell short of winning individual medalist honors in a playoff.
During the 2014-15 season, he appeared in 31 rounds and had a 74.32 stroke average, which was the fifth best in The Valley. On par-72 courses, Gentilella fired a score of 69 twice and carded a low round score of 68 once. He shot a 2-under-par at the NYX Hoosier Invitational, finishing in the top five on the individual leaderboard against high-quality Big Ten opponents. Gentilella also tied for 10th individually at the conference championship in April.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 in Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and in good standing at his college or university.
