McClain Named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

ST. LOUIS – Illinois State's Amanda McClain has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Tuesday. McClain and male winner, Austin Weigle of Southern Illinois, were honored for their performances during the week of December 5-11.

The Illinois State track and field teams posted strong performances in their season openers at the EIU Early Bird, as both men and women earned second-place finishes in the team standings. McClain had a stellar day as she won the women's 400-meter dash by a landslide. McClain won and beat the meet record at a time of 56.45 seconds, winning by two seconds. Her 400-meter time is leading the Valley and is ranked fifth nationally. McClain also won the women's long jump with a mark of 5.64 meters (18-06.00). Equally impressive in the classroom, McClain is majoring in biological science and owns a 3.88 cumulative grade-point average (GPA).

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, must have completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

The men's and women's track and field team will be back in action on Jan. 13, as they take on Indiana State in the annual Terre Haute Double Dual Meet.
