NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State Women's tennis team (6-1) earned its sixth win of the season by sweeping Indianapolis, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Evergreen Racquet Club. Â
"We played well today overall," said head coach Maja Kovacek. "I am glad Jana (Kustkova) was able to come back after losing the first set and being match points down in the match tie breaker."
With all three ISU doubles teams earning a victory Saturday afternoon, the Redbirds entered singles play up 1-0 for the sixth time in their last seven matches. Catherine Shulman and Jana Kustkova earned the first doubles victory for the Redbirds, sweeping Indianapolis' Paige and Dana Olsen 6-0. Marcia Tere-Apisah and Veronika Golanova defeated Florence Renard and Selenay Heper, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point for ISU. To round out doubles action, Kadi Ilves and partner Sarah Paulson topped Allie Smith and Macey Speer in a tight match, 7-5.
The Redbirds were off to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a No. 6 singles victory by Shulman. Shulman defeated Paige Olsen in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Tere-Apisah then won her fifth-straight singles match after topping Allie Smith, 6-1, 6-2, to improve to 5-0 on the season in singles. An undefeated Ilves, clinched the victory for the Redbirds with a 6-1, 6-3, win over Speer. Ilves is now 4-0 overall in singles. Golanova put the Redbirds up, 5-0, with her, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Renard. Minutes later, Valerija Gercar beat Dana Olsen, 6-2, 6-2. To conclude singles play, Kustkova overcame Heper to win 6-7, 6-3, 12-10.
The Redbirds return to the courts Sunday to face off against Butler. Match play will get underway at 1 p.m. at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Illinois.
