NORMAL, Ill. – The Redbird softball team set a new program-best grade point average of 3.55 during the spring 2016 semester, exceeding their set goal of 3.50.
A group of nine student athletes led the team with perfect 4.0 GPAs during the season.
"We had great academic performances from our upperclassmen that really helped since they individually set the importance of staying on top of academics," head coach Melinda Fischer said. "It was also a direct reflection of our study center personnel who helped our large group of freshmen to adjust to the college atmosphere."
In addition to the Redbird's nine perfect GPAs, 19 of ISU's softball players were named to the AFNI honor roll – an Illinois State Athletics distinction awarded to student athletes with a 3.0 GPA or better.
"To get all of our student athletes committed to go after and exceed their goal of 3.50 that was really exciting to have happen for this group," Fischer said.
The Redbirds will return to campus in the fall, looking to continue their academic success achieved during the spring semester.
