NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State women's tennis coach Maja Kovacek announced the National Letter of Intent (NLI) signing of Jelena Karla Vujicic Friday.
"I'm really excited for Jelena to join the ISU family," Kovacek said. "She's a great all-around player and will contribute immediately. She has spent a lot of time preparing and is excited to represent the Redbirds in the best way possible on the court, in the classroom and in the community."
A native of Zagreb, Croatia, Vujicic was ranked as high as No. 437 by Tennis Europe. She advanced to the OP Zenica quarterfinals, the Adriatic Cup quarterfinals and the second round of the Raiffeisen Open. Vujicic was also ranked as high as No. 1,502 by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). At the Losinj Junior Cup, she advanced to the semifinal round in doubles and the second round in singles. Vujicic holds a 9.79 Universal Tennis Rating (UTR).
"I chose Illinois State because of the quality of the academic programs, the high requirements of sports training and the ambitious coach," Vujicic said.
Vujicic additionally earned several victories at the 14-and-under and 16-and-under levels for the Tennis Association of Bosnia and Croatian Tennis Association. She attended Prva Rijecka Hrvatska Gimnazija. Vujicic plans to study journalism at Illinois State.
