MADISON, Wis. – Freshman David Perkins fired a 4-under-par 68 in Tuesday's final round of the Badger Invitational to lead the Illinois State men's golf team, who finished the 13-team event in a three-way tie for fourth place with a 6-over-par 870 (286-296-288) at the par-72 University Ridge Golf Course.

The Redbirds shot an even-par 288 in the final round to tie with Marquette and Wisconsin and finish one stroke behind third-place Wofford. Iowa State ran away from the field, as the Cyclones shot an incredible 10-under-par 278 as a team Tuesday to finish with a 12-under-par 852 (286-288-278), 10 strokes ahead of second-place Nevada.

Perkins, who was competing in his first-ever collegiate event, finished the tournament in a tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboard with a 5-under-par 211 (71-72-68). His final round consisted of five birdies, as he shot a 1-under-par 35 on the front and a 3-under-par 33 on the back.

Junior Zach Burry also ended the 54 holes under par with a 2-under-par 214 (71-71-72), which was good enough for an eighth-place tie. He carded an even-par 72 in the final round, with three birdies and one eagle on the par-5 second.

Sophomore Trent Wallace finished in a tie for 19th place, as he bounced back in the final round with an even-par 72 to finish with a 2-over-par 218 (70-76-72). Wallace also knocked down five birdies Tuesday as well.

Rounding out the scoring for ISU was senior Kyle Meihofer, who shot a 4-over-par 76 to finish with a 230 (74-80-76). He finished with three birdies on the day in a nice bounce-back performance.

Junior Jason Marrs finished the final round with an 83, but his score did not count towards team team's overall total for the round. He finished the tournament with a 236 (76-77-83). Senior Christian Crabill played as an individual and shot a 7-over-par 79 in the final round to finish with a 240 (85-76-79).

"Overall, it was a solid start to the season for us," head coach Ray Kralis said. "Obviously we had some standout play from David Perkins, Zach Burry and Trent Wallace; those three really carried us. We were right there for the whole tournament, and we can certainly build on this going forward. It was nice to have a third guy step up (Perkins) and give us some rounds (Wallace and Burry all of last year), and we will keep working to get that fourth score. But I think this gives us a nice glimpse of our potential going forward."

The Redbirds return to action Sept. 19-20 when they travel to Fort Collins, Colorado, to take part in Colorado State's Ram Masters Invitational at Fort Collins Country Club.
