ST. LOUIS – Illinois State senior swimmer Rachel Root has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Root, a native of Monroe, Wisconsin, took first place in the 100-meter backstroke, clocking a time of 1:06.84, at the Copa Coqui Invitational, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Jan. 3. Root scored nine of Illinois State's 19 team points by touching the wall first in her only individual event at the meet.
Root currently owns the second-best time in the MVC in the 100-yard backstroke (55.12 seconds) and fifth-best time in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.97).
Root and the Illinois State swimming and diving team return to action this weekend, hosting Washington-St. Louis in a dual meet at Horton Pool on Saturday at 1 p.m.
