SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Illinois State swimming and diving team began its annual training trip to Puerto Rico Wednesday, finishing in second place out of six teams at the Copa Coqui Invitational.
The Redbirds finished second (19 points), tied with Cleveland State. Minnesota State-Mankato took first, earning a total of 24 points. Connecticut finished fourth (13), followed by Point-Claire Swim Club (10) and Northern Michigan (9).
Jensen Keck and Rachel Root paved the way for the Redbirds, earning nine points each. Keck took first in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:16.94), while Root touched the wall first in the 100-meter backstroke (1:06.84). Savannah Rubocki also contributed to the final score, earning one point by taking fifth in the 100-meter freestyle (1:03.06).
"I thought the team swam well today. We had a good training session in the morning, and they performed well in all of their races in the afternoon," ISU head swimming coach Scott Cameron said. "It was a great environment with all the other teams, and it sets us up well for a week of hard training."
The team will return to the pool against Washington-St. Louis at Horton Pool, Jan. 14.
