KETTERING, Ohio. – Junior Trent Wallace started strong for the Illinois State men's golf team over Monday's first two rounds of Dayton's Flyer Invitational at the par-71, 7,055 yard NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.
The Redbirds were tied at fourth place at the end of the first round, shooting a 291, and now sit alone at fifth place after shooting a second-straight 291 in the second round, which produced a 36-hole total of 582 (291-291).
Miami (Ohio) leads the 11-team field with a 1-over par 569 (284-285), as the RedHawks are seven strokes ahead of second-place Ohio State.
Wallace fired a 2-over-par 73 over the first 18 holes, before shooting a 1-over-par 72 in the second round to end the day with a 3-over-par 145 (73-72) to sit in an eighth-place tie on the individual leaderboard.
Senior Zach Burry and junior David Rauer were not far behind, as they both finished the 36 holes with a 4-over-par 146. Burry shot an even par 71 and 4-over-par 75, while Rauer started his day with a 2-over-par 73, followed by firing a 2-over-par 73.
Sophomore David Perkins shot a 6-over-par 77 in his first round, and repeated the second 18 holes by finishing with a 71. Freshman Andrew O'Brien began the day strong with a 3-over-par 74 and concluded the second round with a 76.
"The guys did a good job managing themselves and their emotions today," head coach Ray Kralis said. "While we didn't have our A games, we hung in there and kept ourselves in the mix going into tomorrow. There is still a long way to go, and we know we are capable of making a move in the right direction."
The tournament concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes, with teams starting at holes one and 10 beginning at 8:45 a.m. CT.
