ROCKFORD, Ill. – Illinois State competed against Northern Illinois Saturday, but the Redbirds could not pull off the win, falling, 5-2, to the Huskies.
In doubles competition, No. 1 doubles partners Marcia Tere-Apisah and Jelena Karla Vujicic were defeated by NIU's Adey Osabuohien and Raven Neely, 6-2. Jana Kustkova and Gabriela Sprague were victorious over Evelyn Youel and Meghan Montgomerie, 6-3. And, the Redbird duo of Andrea Beneroso and Valerija Gercar fell short to Pauline Chawafambira and Abigail Dekkinga, 6-4.
In singles play, ISU went 2-4. Tere-Apisah competed against Osabuohien but fell short after an intense tiebreaker, 6-4, 5-7, 12-10. Vujicic was defeated by Neely, 6-1, 7-6(5). Kustkova battled hard, but also came up short to Northern's Chawafambira, 6-1, 6-3. Sprague earned one of two singles victories Saturday. She defeated Dekkinga after playing a tiebreaker, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8. No. 5 singles player Gercar was also a winner, as the junior took down Brodie Walker in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Beneroso competed against Abbie-Jade Riley and was defeated after another tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
The Redbirds, now 3-3, will travel to Iowa State Sunday to take on the Cyclones at the McKee Indoor Tennis Complex at 2 p.m.
