NORMAL, Ill. – After a win over Midwest Independent Conference foe Southeast Missouri State at Horton Field House last Sunday, the Illinois State women's gymnastics team gets ready to compete in two meets this weekend. The Redbirds will travel to Ames, Iowa, to face Iowa State, Feb. 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m., and will return home to face Wisconsin-La Crosse, Sunday, at Horton Field House beginning at 11 a.m.
"The team is looking forward to competing this Friday at Iowa State with Gustavus Adolphus and then return back home for another meet on Sunday, against Wisconsin La Crosse," said head coach Bob Conkling. "The girls are hungry to improve in practice and have put in the extra work on becoming better every day. Hard work always pays off, and I believe it will be pay check time this weekend for our team."
Sophomore Meredith LaRoche won the all-around competition for Illinois State gymnastics team Sunday, and helped the Redbirds to a 193.475-191.875 win over SEMO. The win was also aided by Gabrielle Cooke, who took first on floor with a personal-best score of 9.875. Marie Priest took first on vault with a score of 9.775, Anna Marema took first place with a score of 9.775 on bars and Demi Pas also placed first with a score of 9.750 on beam.
The Redbirds face Iowa State on Friday night. The Cyclones are coming off a second-place finish in its first quad meet of the year with a score of 195.350. The team accomplished a season-high score of 49.000 on vault, resulting in the highlight of the meet, along with a first and second-place victory in the all-around competition.
The Redbirds then return home to face Wisconsin-La Crosse. The Eagles beat UW-Stout last Friday night with a score of 190.200. Samantha Wiekamp won the all-around competition for the Eagles with a score of 37.750, aiding their victory.
