ST. LOUIS – Illinois State men's golf standout Trent Wallace was named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, it was announced Wednesday by the league. Wallace also claimed the award back in mid-October.
The sophomore from Joliet, Illinois, shot an impressive 2-under-par 214 (72-71-71), which was good enough for a ninth-place tie on the individual leaderboard in South Alabama's Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate, despite windy and rainy weather conditions over the 72-hole event. His performance also included 13 total birdies, which was the second most in the tournament.
The event was held at the par-72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course in Mobile, Alabama. The 15-team field included four teams from power five conferences: Louisville from the ACC, Mississippi State from the SEC and Kansas State and West Virginia from the Big 12. Louisville, who competed in the NCAA Tournament last year, won the event after firing an 8-under-par 856 (284-283-289), followed by host South Alabama, who shot a 5-under-par 859 (278-287-294).
Illinois State finished the tournament in 12th place with an 890 (297-302-291), as the Redbirds produced their best round over the final 18 holes with a 3-over-par 291.
