TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore Trent Wallace fired a 1-under-par 71 to lead the Illinois State men's golf team Friday in the opening round of Florida State's Seminole Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,172-yard Southwood Golf Club.
As a team, the Redbirds are in last place in an extremely-loaded 14-team field, which includes three teams ranked in the GolfStat Top 50 (Georgia Tech - 24th, Florida State - 31st, Jacksonville - 32nd). Illinois State finished with a 6-over-par 294 and was one of only four schools to shoot over par. Penn State currently leads with a 15-under-par 273, with Florida State (-14), Georgia Tech (-13) and West Virginia (-11) rounding out the top four.
Junior Jason Marrs finished with an even-par 72 and freshman David Perkins shot a 1-over-par 73 for the Redbirds. Junior Zach Burry rounded out the scoring for Illinois State with a 6-over-par 78. Senior Christian Crabill shot an 84 but his round did not count towards the team's total.
The Redbirds return to action Saturday morning with second-round play beginning at 8:45 a.m. CT. The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes Sunday, March 12.
