TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore Trent Wallace produced the lowest round of his Illinois State men's golf career Sunday when he fired a 5-under-par 67 in the final round of Florida State's Seminole Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,172-yard Southwood Golf Club.
Wallace carded a 3-under-par 33 on the front nine, which consisted of three birdies and six pars, and shot a 2-under-par 34 on the back. He eagled the par-4 11th but gave one stroke back with his only bogey later in the round. However, Wallace bounced right back on the next hole with a birdie on the par-5 16th.
The Joliet, Illinois, native finished the tournament in a tie for 14th place with a 6-under-par 210 (71-72-67). The 67 Sunday tied for the second-lowest score in the final round. Penn State led wire-to-wire to win the tournament with a 31-under-par 833 (273-277-283), with nationally-ranked Florida State and Georgia Tech finishing in a second-place tie with a score of 28-under-par. Overall, eight teams finished under par in the the 14-team field.
As a team, the Redbirds shot a 1-over-par 289 in the final round, which was their best score of the tournament. Illinois State finished the event in last place with a 13-over-par 877 (294-294-289).
"Trent (Wallace) played really solid golf today and posted one of the tournament's lowest rounds of the week to finish off a very solid outing," head coach Ray Kralis said. "While today was the toughest of the three with more wind and difficult pin locations, I'm encouraged by the fact that we were just one over as a team, which was our lowest team score of the event.
Freshman David Perkins and junior Jason Marrs each shot 1-over-par 73s in the final round. Perkins had two birdies on the front nine and finished with a 37, before collecting two more birdies to shoot an even-par 36 on the back nine. He finished the tournament with a 2-over-par 218 (73-72-73). Marrs had seven pars on the front nine to finish with a 38 and totaled three birdies on the back nine to shoot a 1-under-par 35. He finished the tournament with a 6-over-par 222 (72-77-73).
Junior Zach Burry rounded out the scoring for the Redbirds in the final round with a 4-over-par 76 (39-37) and finished with a three-round total of 228 (78-74-76). Senior Christian Crabill shot a 79 (38-41) in the final round but his score did not count towards the team's total. He finished the tournament with a 239 (84-76-79).
"Even more so in this one because of the strength of the field, we were exposed by a lack of a solid fourth score," Kralis said. "I know everyone here can contribute, so we need to stay patient and focused. I like the fact that we get right back into competition, and I look for us to put together a solid team effort. Playing a PGA Tour site is motivating and just what we need to put this one behind us."
Illinois State, who is on spring break this week, has a quick turnaround when it travels to Dallas, Texas, to participate in Oral Robert's Bob Sitton Invitational March 14-16 at the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas.
