DALLAS, Texas – The Illinois State men's golf team completed second-round play Tuesday at Oral Roberts' Bob Sitton Invitational at the par-71 TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas. The Redbirds shot a 297 over the second 18 holes and dropped from second to third in the 24-team field with a two-round total of 582 (285-297). Arkansas State shot a 2-under-par 282 in the second round to move up to first place with a 570 (288-282), eight strokes ahead of first-round leader Long Beach State (578) and 12 in front of Illinois State.
Sophomore Trent Wallace and senior Christian Crabill each shot even-par 71s to pace the Redbirds in the second round. Wallace shot even par (36-35) on both nines and finished with four birdies, with three occurring on the back. Crabill fired a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine with three birdies, before recording one more birdie on the back nine to finish with a 36. Wallace sits in a fourth-place tie on the individual leaderboard with an even-par 142 (71-71), while Crabill is in a tie for sixth place with a 1-over-par 143 (72-71).
Freshman David Perkins shot a 3-over-par 74 (37-37) and tallied two birdies, with one coming one each side. He has produced a 4-over-par 146 (72-74) over the first two rounds, which is good enough for a 19th-place tie.
Juniors Jason Marrs and Zach Burry he finished with an 81, but only one of the scores counted towards the team's total in the second round. Marrs, who fired a career-low 1-under-par 70 in the first round, shot a 42 on the front and a 39 on the back and registered two birdies, both coming over the first nine holes. He has a 36-hole total of 151 (70-81). Burry shot a 38 on the front nine, which included two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole, but he was unable to take advantage with three double bogeys. Burry finished the round with a 43 on the back nine and has a two-round score of 156 (75-81).
"Trent (Wallace) and Christian (Crabill) both played big rounds today, and David (Perkins) salvaged a much needed third score for us," head coach Ray Kralis said. "The course is winning against the field, so while we opened the door for some teams, I still feel like we control our own destiny going into tomorrow."
The Redbirds conclude the tournament Thursday with the third and final round. The five student-athletes will tee off from 12:45 - 1:21 p.m.
