SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Illinois State women's tennis team competed at San Jose State Thursday afternoon, falling to the Spartans, 4-0.
In doubles competition, Jana Kustkova and Gabriela Sprague fell to Marine Dans and Gaelle Rey, 6-4. The No. 3 Redbird duo of Andrea Beneroso and Valerija Gercar also fell short, 6-0, to Tamara Culibrk and Miyo Kobayashi. No. 1 doubles partners Marcia Tere-Apisah and Jelena Karla Vujicic did not finish their match against Marie Klocker and Gauvain (5-4).
In singles play, ISU went, 0-3 and did not finish three matches. Kustkova fell to Culibrk in two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Gercar also fell to her match-up of the day, Kobayashi (6-0, 6-1). Beneroso took on Rey, but came up short, falling 6-1, 6-1. Tere-Apisah competed against Gauvain but the two were not able to finish their match, 3-6, 4-1. Vujicic was also unable to complete her match against Klocker, 6-2, 3-4. Sprague moved her way up to the No. 3 singles spot, but the freshman was unable to finish her match against Dans as well, 6-3, 3-3.
Now, 5-9, the Redbirds will have the night to rest before they travel to Santa Clara Friday, where they will take on the Broncos at 6 p.m. Santa Clara last competed Sunday and fell to San Jose State, 5-2.
