WICHITA, Kan. – Illinois State's women's tennis team concluded its 2017 spring regular season Saturday morning by falling, 7-0, at Wichita State. Illinois State finished the season with a 5-2 Missouri Valley Conference record.
For more than half the season, Illinois State did not have enough healthy players to fill all six flights, which meant they automatically started matches trailing, 1-0. In doubles competition Saturday, the Redbirds forfeited the third doubles match and did not finish the second. Marcia Tere-Apisah and Jelena Karla Vujicic came up short against Gabriela Porubin and Fatima Bizhukokva, 6-3.
In singles play, ISU had to forfeit the No. 5 and 6 matches and then, in No. 4 singles, Valerija Gercar retired after partially finishing the first set (3-0) against Ting-Ya Hsu. Tere-Apisah fell in two sets to Giulia Guidetti, 6-2, 6-1. Vujicic battled through two tight sets, but could not pull off the win against Tanaporn Thongsing, 6-4, 7-6(7-1). In No. 3 singles, Gabriela Sprague fell in two sets to Porubin, 6-1, 6-2.
Illinois State finished the regular season with an 11-11 overall record and 5-2 MVC mark.
The Redbirds will have the upcoming week to prepare for hosting the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Team Championships April 28-30, in Normal, Illinois, at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts. Admission to the tournament will be free.
