BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team ended its season by falling to Drake, 4-0, during the Redbirds' semifinal match at the Missouri Valley Conference Team Tennis Championships Saturday at the Bloomington Tennis Center.
"I couldn't be more proud of these guys not just for the effort they showed yesterday and today, but mostly for how they have handled all the adversity this season," said head coach Mark Klysner. "We've had a season of ups and downs for sure, but this has been a resilient group of guys who did their best to battle through and give it their all today. Not a better way to finish the season."
Drake claimed the doubles point after Vinny Gillespie and Tom Hands defeated Andreas Boers and Egehan Sertkaya, 7-5. Ben Wood and Ben Stride topped Dylan Steffens and Christoffer Greve, 6-2. Urh Krajnc Domiter and Matias Chomali competed against Bayo Phillips and Barnaby Thorold in an unfinished match.
In singles play, Calum MacGeoch topped Chomali, 6-4, 6-2. Greve fell to Tom Hands, 6-2, 6-2. Ben Clark beat Sertkaya, 6-3, 6-0. Bayo Phillips competed against Boers in an unfinished match, 6-1, 5-5. Steffens fought hard against Ben Stride in an unfinished three-set match, 6-0, 0-6, 4-4. Krajnc Domiter competed against Vinny Gillespie in an unfinished match, 4-6, 4-1.
The Illinois State men's tennis season is now completed. The Redbirds finished the year with an 8-16 overall record.
