ST. LOUIS – Illinois State women's track & field standout Amanda McClain has been named the Missouri Valley Conference female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Tuesday.
McClain won the 400m title at the MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championship last weekend and earned three All-MVC honors (first, 400m; second, long jump; second 4x400m relay) in the process. She led Illinois State's scoring effort by earning 20 points, scoring 10 points by winning the 400m (54.19), eight points by finishing second in the long jump (19-09.00) and two points for helping the 4x400m relay team earn second (3:40.74).
McClain's 400m title was the Redbird women's first since 2013, and she helped the Redbirds earn second place with 137 points, which was their highest finish since also earning second in 2012. A standout in the classroom as well, McClain owns a 3.92 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) as a biological sciences major.
To qualify for MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.Â
