NCAA Release
INDIANAPOLIS – Illinois State men's golf standout Trent Wallace is headed to the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, one of six regional sites for this year's NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship, it was announced Thursday by the NCAA during a live television broadcast on Golf Channel on NBC. Wallace automatically qualified for the second year in a row after claiming medalist honors nine days ago at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
The sophomore, who also won the MVC Championship as a freshman, competed last season in the Kohler Regional in Kohler, Wisconsin, and finished in a five-way tie for 55th place with an 8-over 224 (72-78-74).
Wallace will be playing May 15-17 at the Kampen Course, a Pete Dye design, which is an 18-hole, links-style, par-72 championship golf course featuring large bent-grass greens, fairways and tees. Florida is the top seed in the 13-team regional, as a total of 75 student-athletes will be competing.
Overall, six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted, with thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams competing at each of three regionals, while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Northern Illinois is the host institution for the 2017 championships.
Wallace took medalist honors at the MVC Championship with a 2-over-par 218 (70-75-73) at the par-72 Cog Hill Dubsdread Course in Lemont, Illinois, last month. He became the sixth individual in program history to win the conference title and earned All-MVC honors for his effort.
