WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Illinois State's men's tennis earned four first-round singles wins on day one of the Purdue Fall Invitational in West Lafayette, Indiana.
"I'm really pleased with our showing today. It was great to see our newcomers get to play their first collegiate matches," head coach Mark Klysner said. "In singles we won four out of six, maybe we should have won the other two, but overall I was happy with how we competed."
The Redbirds returning seniors were dominant in the first round of singles. Andreas Boers defeated Chicago State's Savard Feliz-Antione, 6-2, 6-2. Christoffer Greve topped Ball State's Marko Guzina, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Two Redbird freshmen earned wins in their collegiate debuts. Cameron Petersen earned a win over Washington's Benjamin Van der Sman, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Brandon Lew defeated South Dakota State's Ward Elliot, 6-2, 6-4.
Junior, Igor Kolaric fell in the first round of singles by Ball State's, Nemanja Guzina 6-4, 7-5. Freshmen Manuel Bernhard came up short to Washington's Daniel Li 2-6, 7-6(9), 6-1.
"Doubles was fun to watch," said Klysner. "We were trying out some new combinations and we had some success with them."
Greve and Bernhard earned a doubles win for Illinois State defeating Butler's Lang and Sullivan, 6-1, in the first round. However, the duo dropped the second round to Ball State's Adams and Bonin, 6-1.
Despite a round one doubles loss to Bucknell's Wright and Geber, 6-3, Kolaric and Boers fought back to clinch a second round victory over IUPUI's Budiono and Hollingsworth, 6-2.
Petersen and Lew defeated Washington's Engel and M.Wu 6-4 in the second round after falling to Ball State's Jirus and Robillard, 6-3 in round one.
Competition will resume in West Lafayette, Indiana Saturday at 7 a.m. CT with two rounds of singles followed by the semifinals and finals of doubles.
