Columbus, Ohio – The Illinois State gymnastics team competed against two of the best teams from the Big 10 in No. 36 nationally-ranked Ohio State and No. 27 nationally-ranked Minnesota. Ohio State won the meet with a score of 196.775, followed by Minnesota with a 195.775, and the Redbirds came in third with a score of 190.875.
"The team stuck together and performed solidly, despite a couple of injuries that hurt us today," ISU head coach Bob Conkling said. "They were all very positive throughout the meet, and were confident that they could continue with strong performances even with a few minor set-backs."
Sophomore Alyssa Wiggle was named Illinois State's MVP of the meet. Wiggle stepped in to compete on vault after a few team injuries. She also had a strong performance on the uneven bars, where she received a score of 9.725.
Sophomore Jessica Rothman competed for the first time since becoming a Redbird last year. Conkling expressed his excitement about her return stating, "It was great to see her compete and hit her bar set."
Gabrielle Cooke continued to show her strength in the all-around, where she placed fourth overall with a score of 38.875. Cooke, last week's Midwest Independent Conference Performer of the Week, tied her season-best on the floor exercise with a score of 9.875. Brianna Barrett also had a great performance on the floor with a score of 9.775.
"I was pleased with the team's improvement this meet," Conkling said. "We are going to get some of these athletes back into line up and doing well after their injuries, and we will keep improving."
The Redbirds return to action Sunday, Feb. 4, when they host MIC foe Lindenwood and Winona State at 4 p.m. inside Horton Field House.
