SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Three Redbirds competed Thursday, Oct. 18 in the ITA Midwest Regionals in South Bend, Indiana, going 3-2 in singles collectively.
"Overall a pretty successful day in singles highlighted by Jorge's strong play where he picked up a couple of wins over some pretty highly ranked and seeded players in the draw. I could not be happier for him and how he has been progressing this fall" head coach Mark Klysner said. "Polo (Pol Botifoll Rius) won a nice opening round match over a conference rival. I am hoping for some more good play and we start the doubles draws tomorrow, so it should be a fun day for the 'Birds."
In round one of qualifying singles, Jorge Adair Bartra Quispe overcame Youngstown State's Vasileios Vardakis, 6-2, 7-5. Quispe defeated Chicago State's Francesco Bonacia in a three-setter, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, improving his record to 8-1.
Ruis picked up a win over Vanderbilt's Nick Marino who was ranked No. 11, 6-2, 7-6(2). In the second round of qualifiers, Ruis came up short to Notre Dame's Daniel Rayl, 6-1, 6-2.
Egehan Sertkaya fell by Northern Illinois's Mikko Malinen, 6-0, 6-2 in round one.
Tournament play will continue Friday, Oct. 19 with three rounds of qualifying doubles and the final round of qualifying singles beginning at 7 a.m. CT.
