ISU Takes on Eastern Michigan in Battle of the Birds

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's basketball team heads north to face the Eagles of Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 17.

THE SERIES

• Illinois State leads the series 3-0 dating back to as early as 2006.

• The teams most recently met in 2017 at Redbird Arena and Illinois State snuck away with a 65-56 victory.

• Head Coach Kristen Gillespie holds a 1-0 record over Head Coach Fred Castro after last year's victory.

REDBIRD BITS

Simone Goods began her senior campaign on a high note as she led all scorers in ISU's first two games with 25 and 19 points, respectively. The senior forward also captured her fifth career double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds in the Redbirds' loss to SIUE.
Mary Crompton debuted in a big way, adding two double-digit games to her resume. The freshman guard contributed the team's second-most points on Sunday with 10 and Wednesday with 15.

• Wednesday's win featured a strong trio in Goods, Crompton and TeTe Maggett. Maggett was the third Bird to score in double figures with 10 points.

• The Redbirds moved up two spots in the preseason poll this year and were picked to finish fifth in the MVC.

• Head Coach Gillespie guided the Redbirds to their strongest finish in five years, during her first year at the helm. The Redbirds ended the 2017-18 season with a 14-16 overall record and finished sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference.


 

SCOUTING THE EAGLES

• The Eagles were tabbed to finish third in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference behind Toledo and Central Michigan in the preseason poll.

• Danielle Minot was named to the All Mid-American Conference West Division Preseason Team and is the first Eagle to do so since 2015.

• EMU enters the game 1-0 after defeating Cleveland State 69-63. Courtnie Lewis led the Eagles with 20 points and was followed by Corrione Cardwell (14) and Lorraine Enabulele (11).

• Coming in as the top-ranked class in the MAC, the three freshman Eagles debuted with a combined 14 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

• Head Coach Fred Castro owns an 18-45 overall career record at Eastern Michigan after finishing the 2017-18 season 11-20. 

NEXT UP

The Redbirds will head to Cleveland, Ohio to take on the Cleveland State Vikings on Monday, Nov. 19.
