YPSILANTI, Mich. – Illinois State Women's basketball dropped a hard-fought 50-41 battle to the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Saturday, Nov. 17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Viria Livingston reached a career milestone early on, grabbing her 500th rebound with 7:36 on the clock in the first quarter. Both teams were scoreless for over three minutes, but the 'Birds put the first basket in as Mary Crompton connected with Simone Goods for two. Goods added four more points to secure all six scored in the first for ISU. Eastern Michigan battled back to lead 8-6 at the end of the first period.
The Eagles opened the second period with an 8-0 run to remain in the lead. TeTe Maggett ended ISU's scoring draught with a long jump shot to trail by eight. Danielle Minott responded for EMU with a jumper to push ahead 18-8. Maggett returned down court and knocked down a 3-pointer to keep the 'Birds alive. She then found Kayel Newland for three and ISU quickly tightened the gap to four to end the half.
Illinois State fell behind early in the third as the Eagles opened the half with a 9-0 run to lead 27-14. Goods added two and was followed by Katrina Beck with two back-to-back layups to trail by nine. Maggett and Beck were both sent to the line and added one each to end the third. The 'Birds entered the fourth quarter trailing 36-22.
ISU outscored the Eagles 19-14 in the fourth, but could not overcome the deficit before the clock expired.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Goods scored in double figures for the third straight game adding 13 points in today's match up. The senior forward also grabbed seven rebounds and added two blocks.
- Beck added seven points, three steals and five rebounds.
- The Redbird faced difficulty from the charity stripe, finishing 5-for-14, in the previous two games, Illinois State has averaged 80 percent.
- Livingston grabbed her 500th career rebound and had four total. The senior guard also dished out two assists.
- Eastern Michigan's Courtnie Lewis led all scorers with 16 and was followed by Danielle Minott with 13.
