Redbirds Protect the Nest, Remain Undefeated at Home

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State women's basketball ­­remain undefeated on Doug Collins Court, after capturing a 61-52 victory over Maryville. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Redbirds were off to a slow start and the Saints took advantage, pulling a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Maryville opened with a 5-0 run with Mary Barton leading the way. The junior guard was perfect from beyond the arc, going 2-for-2 leading all scorers with six points at the end of the first period.

Illinois State rallied back in the second quarter and outscored the Saints 21-10 to finish the first half ahead 33-26. The Redbirds took their first lead of the game as Katrina Beck took off on a fast break and added two with 5:46 on the clock in the second period. The 'Birds netted six more to grow the gap to lead 27-20 with just over three minutes to play in the half. Maryville ended the scoring drought with a layup from Uu Longs to trail 29-24. The Saints were caught in foul trouble and sent Simone Goods to the charity stripe. Goods added two points at the line and the Redbirds closed out the second quarter with a layup from Viria Livingston to enter the locker room ahead at the halftime buzzer.

The Saints came within two in the second half, but would never overcome the deficit resulting in a 61-52 Redbird win. Today's game was a regular contest for Illinois State, but an exhibition for the Saints. Illinois State remains undefeated at home and has won four straight contests.

 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Goods added her eighth career double-double, leading all scorers with 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. The senior forward also dished out a career high of three assists.
  • TeTe Maggett added another double-digit game to her resume, scoring 15 for the Redbirds. The junior guard also corralled three rebounds and three assists.
  • Newcomer Lexi Wallen added a career high in her second game since joining the team with six points, five rebounds and one assist.
  • The Saints were led by the trio of Stephanie Sherwood, Barton and Kayla Steward with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.

UP NEXT
The Illinois State women's basketball team will remain home for a Thursday morning matchup against St. Louis University with tip-off set for 11 a.m.
