NORMAL, Ill. – Junior guard TeTe Maggett set a new career high with 24 points as the Redbirds captured their sixth-straight win, downing UMKC 62-55.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a back-and-forth affair in the Swinney Recreation Center with 10 lead changes and six ties, but the Redbirds would ultimately pull away and keep the win streak alive.
Simone Goods added two buckets in the paint to start the Redbirds with a 4-2 lead in the first period. The senior forward added six points to pace the 'Birds to a 14-13 first quarter finish.
UMKC found its first lead of the game in the second quarter as Ericka Mattingly took off on a fast break. Illinois State quickly answered with a layup from Maggett, to battle ahead. The Redbirds outshot and outrebounded the Roos in the first half, but fell behind in the last minute to trail 26-24.
The Redbirds trailed in the first eight minutes of the second half until the duo of Maggett and Goods contributed a 5-0 run to lead 36-35 with 1:58 on the clock in the third quarter. Both teams were caught in foul trouble in the last minute and contributed two points each at the charity stripe. UMKC closed out the quarter with a layup from Kristen Moore to enter the fourth ahead 39-38.
UMKC led by as much as six points and kept the lead until the final four minutes of the game. Illinois State tied it up as Maggett sank a 3-pointer with 4:23 on the clock. Maggett added five-straight points as she converted two at the free-throw line, pushing the 'Birds to a 52-50 lead. Illinois State never looked back and captured its sixth-straight victory, winning 62-55.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Maggett led all scorers and added a new career high with 24 points, going 10-for-10 at the charity stripe, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and 6-for-13 from the floor.
- Goods was solid across the board, adding another 20-point game and finished just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds. The senior forward dished out a career high of three assists and grabbed two steals and two blocks.
- ISU out-rebounded UMKC 38-30. Prior to today's contest, the Redbirds averaged a +5.2 rebounding margin, grabbing more boards than all but two of their opponents this season.
- The Redbird defense remains prominent as they held the Roos to a 36.2 field goal percentage.
- UMKC was led by the duo of Kristen Moore and Ericka Mattingly as they each added 16 points and five rebounds in today's contest.
