NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State women's basketball remains undefeated on Doug Collins Court, after capturing a 61-49 win over the Austin Peay Governors.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Austin Peay shot 75 percent from beyond the arc, going 3-for-4 to pull a 15-12 lead at the end of the first. The Redbirds opened the game with shots from Simone Goods and TeTe Maggett to lead 4-0. Brandi Ferby cut the deficit to one as she hit a three for the Governors with 7:38 on the clock. The two battled in back-and-forth fashion, but Austin Peay would finish the quarter ahead.
Maggett and Goods added nine points each and a combined seven rebounds, leading all scorers at the halftime buzzer. The teams entered the lockerroom, tied 27-27 at the end of the second period.
With 10 lead changes, the game came down to the final minutes of regulation. The two were tied at 48 all with 6:24 on the clock in fourth quarter. Goods connected with Katrina Beck for two with under five minutes, to put the 'Birds back in the lead. Austin Peay was caught in foul trouble and sent Goods to the charity stripe. The senior forward went 10-for-11 at the free-throw line, and added four in the last three minutes of the game. Redbirds led 56-48 with two minutes to play. Illinois State defense held off the Governors, resulting in a 61-49 final score.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Goods added her second-straight double-double and second-straight game with a career high of 14 rebounds. The senior forward led all scorers this evening, with 22 and dished out two assists.
- Maggett added another double-digit game to her resume with 17 points. The junior guard also contributed three assists, seven rebounds and one steal.
- The Redbirds improve to 3-0 at home and tonight is the team's second-straight win.
- ISU out-rebounded the Governors 40-27…this is the second-straight game the 'Birds have pulled down 40 or more boards.
- Illinois State went 21-for-27 at the free-throw line…Austin Peay was sent to the line only seven times.
- Brianah Ferby led the Governors with 10 points, three rebounds and one assist.
