NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team was edged out by Florida Gulf Coast in a tight match Saturday in Fort Myers, Florida.
The Redbirds dropped in the first two finished doubles competitions, giving Florida Gulf Coast a 1-0 lead as they entered singles play.
The Redbirds evenly matched up with the Eagles in singles, taking three wins each. Andreas Boers, Christopher Greve and Igor Kolaric each picked up a win for the Redbirds. Boers faced Marcelo Tebet in three singles and finished in two sets with a score of 7-6, 6-3. Kolaric had a strong finish over Felipe Ramirez at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-0. Greve fought to the finish with a three set victory over Oliver Landert 4-6, 7-6, 7-5.
The Eagles clinched the win in as Egehan Sertkaya, Pol Botifoll Rius and Manuel Bernhard dropped in four, five and six singles respectively. Botifoll Rius took Matio Ruiz to three sets at five singles and fell 2-6, 6-2, 2-6. Sertkaya dropped in the No. 4 spot to Ezequiel Cerrini 1-6, 6-7 and Bernhard fell short at No. 6 singles to Javier Fernandez 5-7, 3-6.
Men's tennis will be back in action tomorrow as the team faces Grand Canyon University in Fort Myers, Florida with a match time set for 12 p.m. CT.
