ABOUT FLORIDA GULF COAST |
FGCU, which went 23-12 last season and advanced to the postseason NIT after finishing as the runner-up in the 2018 Atlantic Sun Tournament, returns just one of its top six scorers from last season, and none of the five players that started at least 20 games. Leading the returnees is Dinero Mercurius, who averaged 7.9 points per game, while pulling down 1.8 rebounds per game; however, he also finished second on the team with 58 three-point makes (and a team-leading 41.4 percent). Head coach Michael Fly is in his first season as head coach of the program, after former head coach Joe Dooley was named the head coach at East Carolina University. Fly had spent seven years on staff with the Eagles, working with Dooley and previous head coach Andy Enfield. |
SERIES HISTORY: |
Florida Gulf Coast won the only meeting between the two schools, taking the season opener last season by a 98-87 final score in Fort Myers. In that game Keyshawn Evans scored a game-high 28 points, while Phil Fayne put in 24 points with two blocked shots. In his Redbird debut, Milik Yarbrough scored eight points with eight rebounds and a career-high 10 assists. Of the returnees to the FGCU roster this season, Mercurius and Christian Carlyle each scored 11 points against the Redbirds, while Ricky Doyle scored eight. |
OF NOTE: |
A walk-on to the Eagles, Ryan McAdoo's dad, Bob, was a five-time NBA All-Star, the 1973 NBA Rookie of the Year, and the 1975 NBA Most Valuable Player. FGCU's basketball nickname of "Dunk City" came after the program's 2012 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 run in which the team as the No. 15 seed knocked off No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State in back-to-back games, before falling to No. 3 seed Florida. |

ABOUT BELMONT |
The Bruins cruised through their 2017-18 season with a 24-9 record, falling in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship game, before turning down an opportunity to extend the season in the CBI or CIT. Back for Belmont is 6-7 guard/forward Dylan Windler, who averaged 17.3 points and 9.3 rebounds last season, setting up a battle of two of the premier small forwards in the country between Windler and Illinois State's Milik Yarbrough. Also back for the Bruins is 6-2 guard Kevin McClain, who averaged 12.6 points while dishing out 70 assists, and 5-11 guard Nick Hopkins who averaged 7.4 points during his freshman campaign with the team. |
SERIES HISTORY |
Illinois State and Belmont have never faced each other on the basketball court; however, the Redbirds have a long history against many OVC opponents, and have faced at least one OVC team every season since 2006-07. |
OF NOTE |
Now in his 37th season of coaching, Belmont head coach Rick Byrd has never faced off against Illinois State. It is not, however, the first time a Dan Muller-coached team has faced off against Belmont. As an assistant coach at Vanderbilt from 2000-2012, Muller and the Commodores went 3-0 against the Bruins. |

Cameron Bowles, a 6-7 rising sophomore led the team with 26 blocked shots, while rising senior guard Rob Shaw dished out 74 assists – second-most on the team. |
SERIES HISTORY |
Illinois State has a firm grip on the all-time series between the two programs, holding a 21-1 record. The Redbirds won the first 13 games of the series, before the Cougars' lone win of the series came during the 1985 season. Since then the Redbirds have rattled off eight more wins, including a 76-56 win during the 2013-14 season. |
OF NOTE |
The last game in the series that was played in Chicago came on February 13, 1942. Illinois State is 27-6 all-time against teams currently in the WAC, with the last non-Chicago State game coming during the 1998-99 season with a win over UMKC. |

Also back is 6-9 senior forward Derek Ogbeide, who averaged 6.9 points and a returnee-best 6.2 rebounds per game. Sophomore Rayshaun Hammonds averaged 6.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game in his first season as a collegiate player. |
SERIES HISTORY |
Illinois State and Georgia have never met on the basketball court. The Redbirds are, however, familiar with opponents from SEC teams, including Ole Miss, who is scheduled to come to Redbird Arena this season. In fact, under current head coach Dan Muller, the Redbirds are 3-1 against teams from the conference, including a 2-0 mark last year with wins over South Carolina and Ole Miss. |

OF NOTE |
Illinois has a strong history with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, including one of the first settlements in Nauvoo, Illinois. Members of the Mormon church settled in Nauvoo, including Joseph Smith, the leader of the LDS church. After Smith's death (his burial plot is in Nauvoo), Brigham Young helped lead a group of the remaining members to the greater Salt Lake City, Utah region, which remains home for most in the religion. Another settlement of LDS refugees (Missouri had banished those in the religion) was in Quincy, Illinois. In 2002, the 320-voice Mormon Tabernacle Choir performed for the town of Quincy and donated the proceeds of the event (approximately $75,000) back to the town in gratitude for help during their early time of need. |
