NORMAL, Ill. Illinois State swimming head coach Scott Cameron has announced the addition of Steve Mohs to the Redbird coaching staff. Mohs will be joining as the new assistant swim coach. He joins the Redbirds as an experienced athlete and coach, having volunteer, club and collegiate experience to add to the mix. Â
"I am beyond excited to announce Steve Mohs as the new assistant swim coach at Illinois State," commented Cameron. "Steve has a great background in coaching, where he has had multiple successful stops in his career as an assistant coach, associate head coach and a head coach. His experience will be invaluable as we move forward this season, not only with our team, but our staff as well. He brings a lot of passion and energy to the deck, and that will have a very positive effect on our team.  We are very excited to have him become a Redbird!"
Mohs has 16 years of collegiate coaching experience, including four years as head coach at Morningside College (2008-12) and four more as the head coach at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota (2012-16). Most recently, Mohs served as the associate head coach at South Dakota (2017-18). Â
Mohs has traveled the country to work different swim camps, most notably the Texas Longhorn Swim Camp and the Stanford International Swim Camp, where he worked alongside highly-respected coaches Eddie Reese and Greg Meehan, respectively.
Mohs attended St. Cloud State University where he was a captain on the swim team and earned his bachelor's degree in sports management in 2001. He began his coaching career that fall as a graduate assistant for the swim program at St. Cloud and was later hired as an assistant coach. He worked primarily with distance swimmers and individual medley specialists and oversaw the team's off-season conditioning and weight training programs.Â
Morningside offered Mohs his first head coaching gig in 2008. In four years with the Mustangs, Mohs expanded the program's roster from 15 to 40 student-athletes. Morningside boasted 44 NAIA national qualifiers and had 35 athletes set individual records in his four seasons. He was named Coach of the Year in 2012 after leading Morningside's women's team to a third-place finish at the NAIA Liberal Arts Conference Championship meet.Â
Mohs moved from Morningside to St. Catherine in 2012. In four years in St. Paul, Mohs helped the program set 13 individual records on the women's side and three team records. Members of his program were named SCU Athlete of the Year twice and earned two MIAC Diver of the Year awards. The Wildcats placed in the top-six of 11 teams in all four years at the MIAC Championships.Â
This past season at South Dakota, Mohs worked primarily with the distance and individual medley swimmers, helping to guide the men's team to a second-place finish in the Summit League, and the women's squad to a fourth-place finish. The Coyote program finished with nearly 20 school record and a slew of personal best performances, while meeting three NCAA "B" Standard Cuts.
