The Illinois State women's soccer team (6-5-2, 1-1-0) fell to Drake (5-7-0, 2-0-0) in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday night. The Bulldogs snapped the Redbirds' four-game winning streak in the match that saw them score two second half goals to help themselves to a 2-0 victory.
The first half proved to be a defensive battle, with both teams unable to get on the scoreboard and combining for only six total shots.
Drake would break through in the 66th minute when freshman and reigning MVC Newcomer of the Week Alison Walls netted her third goal of the season. Just two minutes later, sophomore Olivia Bruce would collect a rebound and slot it in to the far post to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.
The Bulldogs outshot the 'Birds, 11-10 and 8-5 in shots on goal. Seven different Redbirds tallied shots for Illinois State with Abby Basler, Kiley Czerwinski, Kate Del Fava, Mikayla Unger and Natalie Vaughn-Low all recording shots on goal. Junior Haley Smith had six saves in goal.
UP NEXT: The Redbirds will take a brief recess from Missouri Valley Conference play to host IUPUI (4-6-3, 2-1-1 Horizon League) at home on Monday, Oct. 1. Monday's match will serve as Illinois State's Pink Out/Breast Cancer Awareness match. The 'Birds will take the pitch decked in pink uniforms and breast cancer survivors are invited to participate in a Breast Cancer Survivor walk at halftime. Concessions will be selling special pink ribbon cookies.
