Goods’ Double-Double Leads ‘Birds Past Southern Illinois

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's basketball team defeated Missouri Valley Conference opponent Southern Illinois, 60-52, on Friday night. Senior Simone Goods led the team with 16 points and 10 rebounds, posting her sixth double-double of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Goods added a bucket for the 'Birds with 7:03 on the clock in the first to end Southern's early 5-0 run. Illinois State was led by junior guard TeTe Maggett in the first quarter who sank two pivotal 3-pointers, one coming seconds before the buzzer. Maggett's triple gave ISU a 12-9 lead as they entered the second period.

The Redbirds went 9-for-12 at the free-throw line while the Salukis did not have a single attempt at the charity stripe in the first half. The squads each added 12 in the second period, resulting in a 24-21 halftime score.

Southern Illinois outscored the 'Birds 20-14 in the third quarter to lead 41-38. Brittney Patrick put the Salukis up as she sank a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to play in the third. The Redbirds were unable to respond, missing their final two shot attempts and trailed entering the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter began with a back-and-forth battle as the two teams tied four times in the final period. Goods added two at the charity stripe with 2:49 on the clock to push a 51-49 lead. The relentless Redbirds never let up, and went on to collect a 60-52 victory. Illinois State is 7-1 at Redbird Arena and improves to 10-6 on the season with a 3-2 conference record.

 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Goods led all scorers with 16 points and collected her 10th career double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds. She is now tied for 14th in the ISU record books for career double-doubles and enters the top 25 in ISU history with six double-doubles in season. The senior forward was also perfect from the free-throw line, netting 8-for-8.
  • TeTe Maggett followed with 12 points, two rebounds and two assists.
  • Katrina Beck was strong across the board, adding nine points, three assists, three steals and four boards.
  • Viria Livingston sank a 3-pointer in the first half, netting her 500th career point tonight.
  • The Salukis were led by sophomore Makenzie Silvey who had 13 points, hitting 6-of-15 from the field. Sophomore Abby Brockmeyer pulled down 11 rebounds
