Redbirds Drop Sunday Matinee to Missouri State

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's basketball team fell to Missouri State 57-41 on Sunday afternoon in Redbird Arena. Junior TeTe Maggett led the Redbirds with 11 points, six rebounds and two assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The 'Birds got on the board first when Viria Livingston intercepted a Missouri State pass, starting a possession that resulted in a Megan Talbot lay-up. Lexy Koudelka added two more points on free throws to give Illinois State a 4-0 lead at the first media timeout. Missouri State would then go on to score nine unanswered points, five of them by MSU freshman Jasmine Franklin.

The Redbirds were held to a season-low six points in the first quarter for the second time this season, the first occurring during the Nov. 17 loss to Eastern Michigan.

The Lady Bears then went on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter, increasing the lead to a 12-point differential. Paige Saylor sank a three-point field goal in the second quarter that brought Illinois State within seven.

Illinois State battled for a comeback late in the second half with back-to-back triples coming from Kayel Newland and Maggett. Just two minutes remained on the clock in the fourth and ISU trailed 57-47. Missouri State was held off for another possession and the Redbirds had an open look, but just missed from long range. Missouri State finished strong, adding two at the charity stripe to close out a 59-47 victory.
