Tom Szymoniak Hired As New Head Golf Professional At Weibring Golf Club

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State Director of Athletics Larry Lyons has announced the hiring of Tom Szymoniak as the new head golf professional at the Weibring Golf Club. Szymoniak will begin his duties on January 6 and takes over for longtime head golf professional Laura Provost, who is retiring at the end of the December.

"Tom brings 18-plus years of experience in the golf industry as a head golf professional and in golf operations management," Lyons said. "We have high expectations that he will be a key contributor to the excellent team already in place, as we continue to elevate the experience at the Weibring Golf Club."

Szymoniak comes to Illinois State after spending that last year-plus as director of operations for the Illinois Fighting Illini baseball and swim & dive staffs. Prior to joining the athletics staff at Illinois, he spent six years at Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana, serving as the club's general manager in his last two years there. During his time at Stone Creek, Szymoniak managed club programming, financial performance, team leadership and day-to-day operations at the course.

"A great foundation is in place at the club from Laura's twenty-five plus years of experience and from the attention to detail that Course Superintendent Travis Williams has displayed on the golf course. I am excited to join the Illinois State athletic department and work together with a quality group of people to deliver an exceptional golf experience for our Redbird golf teams and guests alike. The Weibring name has represented Illinois State University to the highest level and I look forward to leading our golf operation to be the best it can be."

Prior to his role at Stone Creek, he spent seven years in the Atlanta area with positions at Sequoia Golf and the Atlanta Athletic Club. These roles provided great experience in athletics operations and business management. Szymoniak is originally from the Chicago area and graduated from Northeastern Illinois University as a marketing major in 2003. He and his wife Jackie currently reside in Mahomet with their daughter, Ellie.
