ST. LOUIS – After helping the Redbirds to wins over the No. 1 team in the league, Missouri State, and Southern Illinois, Illinois State women's basketball senior Simone Goods and junior TeTe Maggett have swept the MVC Weekly honors, announced the league Monday.
Goods was named the Valley Player of the Week after leading ISU to its first MVC road sweep since the 2013-14 season, recording a combined 47 points and leading all scorers in both contests with 23 and 24 points, respectively. On Friday, Goods had a 19-point output in the second half, surging ISU to victory. In the win over SIU, Goods put up eight points in three minutes following the halftime break. She averaged exactly one point per minute of playing time this weekend, clocking in 24 minutes on Friday and 23 on Sunday. Sunday's game marks the 10th time Goods has had 20 or more points in a contest this season. The senior forward also averaged 4.5 boards per game and grabbed the final rebound of the game at SIU, which aided in securing the ISU victory.
Maggett, who was deemed the MVC Newcomer of the Week, was the saving grace in the Redbirds' close-game finishes this weekend, contributing the final points in both matchups. Maggett was the second-leading scorer on Friday with 22 points, with the last three points being extremely critical, as she sealed the game at the free-throw line. The junior point guard saved her scoring flourish for her late game heroics in Sunday's contest, pacing the 'Birds to a strong finish. She scored 11 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter and 10 in the final four minutes. She was 2-for-2 from long range and 4-for-4 from the floor in the closing four minutes, helping the 'Birds overcome a five-point deficit.
This marks the second time the duo has swept the weekly honors, accomplishing the feat on Dec. 10 and the third time this season the program has swept, with Maggett garnering both awards on Jan. 2.
The Illinois State women's basketball team will be back in action on Friday as they travel down I-74 to take on MVC foe, Bradley, with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
