ST. LOUIS – For the first time in his career, sophomore thrower Logan Calvin has been selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
This award marks the ninth weekly honor for the Redbirds this season, the most among all Valley institutions. In addition, Illinois State has now had at least one student-athlete recognized in six of the seven possible weeks, joining Southern Illinois as the only other school to accomplish the feat.
Calvin has been knocking on the door of receiving a weekly award for the entire 2018-19 campaign, and his hard work was finally rewarded after capturing a pair of lifetime personal-bests in the shot put and weight throw at Wisconsin's Badger Red & White Classic.
Calvin made his biggest impact in the shot put, finishing third overall with the second-farthest heave (18.50m/60-08.50) in Redbird track and field history. Calvin, who has recorded a personal-best in the event four times this season, enters Saturday's MVC Indoor Championship ranked fourth in the Valley and 39th in all of Division I. As if this wasn't enough, Calvin also posted a personal-best in the weight throw, placing sixth with a distance of 17.86m (58-07.25), a mark which sits fifth in the MVC.
The Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams will face their biggest test of the season this weekend when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to compete in the 2019 MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Northern Iowa.
