Redbird Baseball Scores Six Runs In Final Inning to Defeat Racers, 9-5

MURRAY, Ky. – The Illinois State baseball team defeated Murray State by a final score of 9-5 Saturday afternoon in Murray, Kentucky. The Redbirds trailed the Racers 9-3 in the final inning before Illinois State scored six runs in the top of the ninth to beat Murray State 9-5. The Redbirds also won the series over the Racers.

Scoring Breakdown:

  • In the top of the first inning, Rave scored on a passed ball to put the 'Birds on the board. Then, Aeilts hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Libman to make the score 2-0 in favor of ISU after the first inning.
  • Parola grounded out in the top of the fourth inning that brought home Huggins to make the ISU lead 3-0 over Murray State.
  • The Racers answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-run game.
  • Murray State took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning by scoring three runs. The Racers led the Redbirds 5-3.
  • In the top of the ninth inning, Illinois State would score six runs to take the lead. First, Hays walked to bring home Libman. Next, Huggins singled to right field to drive home two runs to put the 'Birds up 6-5. Rave would single later in the inning to bring home Hays. Huggins would later score on an error by the catcher after he stole third. Then, Parola doubled to bring home another run to make the score 9-5 in favor of Illinois State.
  • Gilmore and the Redbirds held off the Racers in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 9-5, and win the series.
