ST. LOUIS – Illinois State junior left-handed pitcher Colton Johnson has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. This is the second time in as many weeks that a Redbird has won this honor.
Johnson was phenomenal last week for the Redbirds. The lefty appeared in two games with a 1-0 record and an unblemished ERA. Johnson went 8.1 innings, allowing only one hit and giving up four walks, while striking out nine. He also held opponents to a .040 batting average.
Johnson went 5.1 innings against the Illini, as he surrendered just one hit and struck out three batters to keep the game tied. He then went on to earn the win in the first game of the doubleheader against the Missouri State Bears. Johnson went three complete innings to earn the victory, not allowing a hit in the game, while walking one and striking out six.
The Kewanee, Illinois native is 4-0 on the season with a 2.31 ERA. He has appeared in 15 games with two starts. In 39 innings, Johnson has given up 30 hits, 12 runs, 10 earned runs, and 16 walks. Johnson has struck out 38 batters while limiting opponents to a .213 batting average.
The Redbirds return to action tomorrow on the road in Chicago to face the UIC Flames. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
